The Farmer

Tim Jolly and now his son Will Jolly have been growing asparagus at Roudham Farm since 1989. The light sandy soils combine with fluctuating temperatures to produce asparagus of the highest quality with great British taste and flavour!

We have always supplied Covent Garden, Spitalfields and Western International markets in LondoThe Jolly Familyn and through them restaurants, catering businesses and retail outlets through the capital and beyond. We also supply a major Supermarket. Our local restaurants and shops are very important customers, and give us great feedback. Its always great to see our customers again each Spring, like old friends!

Every year letters arrive from appreciative asparagus lovers. We have to keep secret who they are, but they are obviously discerning!

We are always trying improve and develop what we do:

  • trialling new plants - this year a new variety will be harvested which will extend the season
  • upgrading our grading and packing line
  • improved hydro cooling equipment to keep the spears in perfect condition
  • lots of tasting to ensure quality control!

Natural History

Asparagus officinalis is an edible member of the Lily family (Liliaceae) and originates from the East Mediterranean coast. It has a high degree of salt tolerance and can survive extremes of temperature to produce tender shoots each spring. Asparagus is a rich source of folic acid, pro-vitamin A, vitamin C and iron. Norfolk County Asparagus is grown from the Gijnlim variety to produce spears of a consistent high quality.

Asparagus is best enjoyed freshly cut, before its natural sugars turn to starch. Freshness can be preserved however by wrapping bunches in a clean wet cloth and keeping in a fridge.                                                                 (From Left to right; Tim, Ellen, Bella, Will , Bea
